The feeling of contentment Winston had felt sharing his story and his memories of Marguerite with Josh was soon banished when he opened the door to his home and felt the all-enveloping presence of Monty once again. As usual, he was sitting in Winston’s favourite chair, toast crumbs down his front and on the carpet around him.

‘Where’ve you been?’ Monty asked as Winston came into the room.

‘I told you. I went to the bookshop.’

‘You left me.’

‘I asked you to come with me,’ Winston reminded him, but he’d been relieved when his brother had declined his invitation. He’d needed a short break.

Monty waved an exasperated hand at him. ‘I didn’t feel up to it.’

‘The fresh air and walk would have done you good.’

‘Would it?’

‘Yes!’ Winston all but barked, and then felt bad. ‘I’ll make us a cup of tea.’

‘Good idea. Want a hand?’

It was the first time Monty had offered to help with anything since he’d arrived.

‘You’re okay there,’ Winston said. The truth was, he needed to think.

Having his brother there with him was proving to be more than a mild irritation. It was resurrecting all sorts of issues that had been locked away for years. Issues and emotions that Winston thought had been dealt with and forgotten, but clearly they weren’t.

Because there’d been more to that night at the dance hall than Monty cutting in with Marguerite. Winston had just chosen to not think about it for a few decades.
